This city is very charming and unique in its own way. All of the buildings are old with uneven brick and creaking floors...i love it! Here are some pictures I took over the past 2 weeks while living here. I hope to start illustrating the city and its wonderful architecture soon!

So I decided to make a summer project for myself. I developed this story about a young girl in the 1940's who lives with her grandparents in a busy city. She aspires to be a magician and her name is Isabelle. Here she is...so far! :)

I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to create 6 illustrations for the CCS Viewbook 2011. I was given 6 Detroit hangout spots: Fox Theatre, Joe Louis Arena, Mexicantown, Eastern Market, Avalon Bakery, and MOCAD. Here are the beginnings of some of the Illustrations. I have been working like a dog these last couple days! Anything for my school :)

Detroit Somerset Project

The Detroit Shoppe in Somerset has created 3 scholarships for the illustration students this year. We have to design a poster that we think best represents the city. Here is my design so far.

I wanted to represent the city in a welcoming, playful way. My style is similar to the Madeline books by Ludwig Bemelmans. There is something about the buildings in Detroit that make just love to draw them and be around them. They contain so much history and have been through so much with the city. I wanted to keep the french influence of the buildings present in my design. Enjoy :)

ICON 6 was a great experience. I met so many wonderful artists and I'm very grateful to have been apart of everything. I drew a bunch while I was there, and since then. I will update very soon. I also went to see Inception a few days ago and it was fantastic! I went with Mike and my dad. This was the first movie my dad has been to since his stroke in December, so he really enjoyed it!

Here is a sketch I have been working on for a Red Vines candy contest! The roller coaster is made of licorice...yum. So far this summer has been great. I've been staying busy with two summer classes, working at LA Fitness, and drawing everyday!

Here is my piece for a "relationship between the dead and the living" for Erik Olson's Tech 2 class. Since my dad suffered a massive stroke in December, I thought the process of his recovery, and what happened to his brain, related to this assignment.

When he suffered his stroke, he lost apart of his brain around his speech area mostly. Once a person's part of their brain dies, it never comes back. My dad has since had to rewire his brain and channel other areas to pick up the signals and functions that his dead area once did. He is living with this each day, in a positive and hopeful way. So, I related this process to my artwork. I also really wanted to draw my dad. I think I will end up painting this over the summer. :)

Tonight I watched the Kid's Choice Awards with the kids I babysit and felt like I was 10 again. What really made my night was Katy Perry getting squirted in the face with slime. It was awesome, because she sucks.

I was also working on this seven deadly sin spot (gluttony) and the little girl I babysit asked me my this lady was so small? I said an evil witch was jealous of her beauty so she shrunk her down to the size of a blade of grass. She then found a kiddie-size ice cream sundae and dove in. It was fun.....;)

I was looking at old pictures of my cousins and me as kids and remembered how much fun it was to dress up at my grandma's house in White Lake, MI. Here are some monster sketches for my Monsters Are Just Like You book I am making.

Winter Break is almost gone...

I am upset that my break seemed a lot shorter this year than last. Unfortunately for my family and me, we did not have the best Christmas and New Year's. We spent all of our holiday in the hospital visiting my dad because he had a stroke. He is recovering in rehab now and we think he will be home in a couple weeks. I just can't wait for him to come home and be himself again, but I know this will take some time.

I was able to do quite a bit of sketching this break though which I am happy about. My goal was to create a website, but I wasn't so successful because of the circumstances. Here are some drawings of my dad I did in the hospital. I drew him while he was sleeping because when he is not sleeping, he has a busy day of rehab, speech therapy and dialysis. Isn't he cute! :) haha.

I also had my skills tested by some women in the family waiting room at Botsford Hospital. They noticed I was drawing Bobby Budnick from Salute Your Shorts on a dry erase board and decided to shout out requests. I was drawing tweetie bird and other things like this Tiger Woods...

I will post some more sketches before school starts on mondayy!

Aliens

For my image making 1 class, our final assignment is to design a video game. My team came up with a futuristic alien like setting on another planet. Basically, a group of scientists travel to this newly discovered planet and one of the humans breaks from the group and turns evil and manipulates the aliens on the planet to follow him or her (we haven't decided the sex yet).

I was interested in being apart of creating an underwater environment for the game, since we have to make at least 5 different environments. Here are some aliens I made to fit the underwater scene....and a badass heroine in a spacesuit as well.
